I unrolled the newspaper in my hand and buried my face in it, pretending to be deep in thought and seeking a cogitative solitude amidst a crowd. Actually my eyes had been suddenly flooded with tears.. The newspaper had been rolled neatly earlier because I had been sitting in an auditorioum in Lucknow listening in rapt attention to a patriotic poet...

The words kept flowing evoking a patriot lurking deep inside and swelling my chest with a warrior's pride.... The tears slowly eased away.. I raised my head from the newspaper roll... Something made me steal a quick glance sideways. I saw an elderly gentleman sitting with an equally proud, martial air that had a whiff of deep pain... the corner of his eyes somewhat moist .. He later told me that he had lost his son in the Kargil war in 1999..

Not many of those reading this post would know the significance of 3rd of July.. Some would call it " India's Gay Day", some ... Actually for the average Indian nothing significant happened.. except perhaps the death anniversary of an odd soldier who had helped turn around a difficult situation in Kargil in 1999...

A warrior who had fought valiantly right until the last moment of his life when he was shot through his head- it seemed to the Pakistani cowards that the other parts of his body were impervious to the bullets they had shot at him as he has surged from bunker to bunker clearing each one out single-handedly in close quarter combat.. As he fell, he only had the time to say, " Don't spare 'em.. "

Thus runs the saga of Tiger Hill and "Pahalwan Pandey" in the annals of 1/11 Gorkas, the Indian Army, NDA, IMA, Sainik School Lucknow...

ADIOS, Capt. Manoj Pandey, 1/11 Gorkas........

On 16 December 1971, Lt. Gen A.A.K. Niazi, CO of Pakistan Army forces located in East Pakistan signed the instrument of surrender.

At the time of surrender only a few countries had provided diplomatic recognition the new nation. Bangladesh sought admission in the UN with most voting in its favor, but China vetoed this as Pakistan was its key ally. However, the United States was one of the last nations to accord Bangladesh recognition.

To ensure a smooth transition, in 1972 the Simla Agreement was signed between India and Pakistan. The treaty ensured that Pakistan recognized the independence of Bangladesh in exchange for the return of the Pakistani PoWs. India treated all the PoWs in strict accordance with the Geneva Convention, rule 1925. It released more than 96,000 Pakistani PoWs in five months. Further, as a gesture of goodwill, nearly 200 soldiers who were sought for war crimes Bengalis were also pardoned by India. The accord also gave back more than 13,000 km² of land that Indian troops had seized in West Pakistan during the war, though India retained a few strategic areas; most notably Kargil (which would in turn again be the focal point f between the two nations in 1999). This was done as a measure of promoting "lasting peace" and was acknowledged by many observers as a sign of maturity by India. But some in India felt that the treaty had been too lenient to Bhutto, who had pleaded for leniency, arguing that the fragile democracy in Pakistan would crumble if the accord was perceived as being overly harsh by Pakistanis.

During the war there were widespread killings and other atrocities – including the displacement of civilians in Bangladesh (East Pakistan at the time) and widespread violations of human rights – carried out by the Pakistan Army with support from political and religious militias began with the start of "Operation Searchlight" on 25th March 1971.

Bangladeshi authorities claim that three million people were killed, the Hamoodur Rahman Commission, an official Pakistan Government investigation, put the figure as low as 26,000 civilian casualties. The international media and reference books in English have also published figures which vary greatly from 200,000 to 3,000,000 for Bangladesh as a whole. A further eight to ten million people fled the country to seek safety in India.

A large section of the intellectual community of Bangladesh were murdered, mostly by the Al-Shams and Al-Badr forces, at the instruction of the Pakistani Army. Two days before the surrender, on 14th December 1971, Pakistan Army and Razakar militia (local collaborators) picked up at least 100 to 300 physicians, professors, writers and engineers in Dhaka, and executed them, leaving the dead bodies in a mass grave. There are many mass graves in Bangladesh, and more are continually being discovered (such as one in an old well near a mosque in Dhaka, located in the non-Bengali region of the city, which was discovered in August 1999). The first night of war on Bengalis, which is documented in telegrams from the American Consulate in Dhaka to the United States State Department, saw indiscriminate killings of students of Dhaka University and other civilians.

Numerous women were tortured, raped and killed during the war; the exact numbers are not known and are a subject of debate. Bangladeshi sources cite a figure of 200,000 women raped, giving birth to thousands of "War Babies". The Pakistan Army also kept numerous Bengali women as sex-slaves inside the Dhaka Cantonment. Most of the girls were captured from Dhaka University and private homes.

Bangladesh is a free country today... A lot (actually most) of the responsibility for which lies with India.. They could probably never have tasted the joy of freedom had it not been for the Indian assistance - India waged a full-scale war with their tormentors, for their sake... I don't wish to go into the political aspect of the things.. the fact is, they are not being raped, killed, mutilated, exploited today almost entirely because of India........
(Any Bangladeshi supporters reading this blog - kindly refrain from commenting.. If your forefathers had the balls, they wouldn't have let all that happen to them - their wives, daughters and sisters were captured en masse to serve as "sex slaves" in Pakistani army camps...)

I recently read this piece of information somewhere on the internet... It contained a senior official at the nobel prize committe saying that Mahatma Gandhi was not awarded the nobel peace prize because he was assinated in 1948...

When asked Why was he not awarded the same earlier.., the man openly spoke about the British political pressure... since India was not a free country untill then and the "British Viceroys lobbied against Nobel...."
Even Jawahar Lal Nehru was nominated a whopping 11-times... But they thought it better to not award it to anybody for a particular year than award it to him... (and offend some of their *Big Bosses*!!! - Entirely my outlook on the incident.. may not be true! :)

"Mahatma Gandhi did not get the Nobel Peace Prize in 1948, the year he was supposed to after being shortlisted five times, because he was assassinated, said Ole Danbolt Mjos, the chairman of the Nobel Prize Committee. Mjos confirmed this matter, on the committee’s records, during his current visit here as the guest of Bangladesh’s Nobel Peace Laureate and rural banking pioneer, Muhammad Yunus.

His reply as to why Gandhi did not get it posthumously was “not unequivocal”, said The Daily Star Tuesday.

Nobel is not generally given to anyone posthumously, he said in an interview, explaining that the one given to a former UN secretary general Dag Hammarskjoeld in 1961 was “a one-time affair and is not likely to be repeated”.

He said the committee had decided ‘unanimously’ on awarding Gandhi in 1948, but did not give it after he was assassinated Jan 30, 1948. The plan was abandoned, the newspaper said.
“For the first four, majority opinion made sure he did not come by the prize. But then, at the end of 1947, the Nobel Committee finally reached a unanimous decision that, come 1948, the Indian nationalist leader would be the recipient of the prize,” he told The Daily Star here.
Reports of that era pertaining to the short-listing say that India was then under the British rule and the British Viceroys lobbied against the Nobel being given to the foremost adversaries fighting for India’s freedom.

Nobody was conferred with the Nobel Peace Prize in 1948, the website of the committee shows.

The Nobel committee chief was asked why Gandhi, the man from whom Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela learnt about non-violence, was never deemed qualified to be a Nobel laureate. While defending the sincerity and the transparency of the selection process of the awards over the years, Mjos conceded that there had been controversies surrounding many choices.

In 1936, the Nobel for a German caused fury to Hitler; and in 1975, Andrei Sakharov’s winning the prize pushed the Soviet leadership into apoplectic mode. And then you remember that much similar a reaction came from Nikita Khrushchev when in 1960 Boris Pasternak won the Nobel for Literature. In the end, Pasternak declined to accept the award and died heart-broken not much later, Mjos told the newspaper.

Mjos also accepted the “terrible reality of the state sometimes coming down hard on the individual whom the Nobel Committee honours”.

He cited the case of Aung San Suu Kyi, who has not travelled to Oslo to receive the prize and so has never delivered an acceptance speech. Perhaps the junta in Myanmar would have permitted her to leave the country and go to Norway?

However, Mjos said that unless she was to have a guarantee that she would be allowed back into the country after receiving the Nobel, Suu Kyi would not leave her homeland."

What Can WE Do About Terrorism..?!!!

Every average-joe detests terrorism... For it (symbolically) threatens his existense...
But he is scared of taking the tough road... leaving the task of protecting his @$$ to the security forces...
But it is impossible to have soldiers spying on every person in a country (I'm sure even China doesn't have such a thing where it is mandatory for able-bodied people to join security forces). Now most civilians aren't smart enough to figure who's lurking out there next door disguised as a software engineer or apprehend their fate that destiny has in store for them at the next intersection, bus-stop....

So how can a common man help..???

I feel there is no other way but this to ensure sustainable peace... We can stop a terrorist dead in his tracks with a bullet through his heart but that does not change his heart... He still remains a TERRORIST... Amongst his mates he would be proudly referred to as a martyr... for having killed/maimed Kaafirs or non-believers.... He not only remains a terrorist at soul but also becomes an icon, a role-model, inspiring many others to follow... For amongst the followers of some ideologies in certain communities, torturing and killing people following other belief systems is the shortest-cut to God....

Really! Kashmir was a predominantly Hindu region before the muslims came to India.. Even at the time of Indian/Pakistani Independence, Kashmir had a Hindu king Hari Singh... The Pakistani army had invaded Kashmir disguised as tribals and Hari Singh had opted to be with India if India helped Kashmir throw out the invaders... India did so and Kashmir became a part of India... And thus started a series of wars between India and Pakistan (I have seen one in my lifetime, don't know how many more are there to come..)

I can't see what rights does Pakistan have to claim Kashmir... The fact that Kashmir has been so grossly neglected by the previous governments in India is a completely different thing... More about that some other day when I get the urge to say something....

Everbody by now must be aware of the bias of National media on "Amarnath Land issue" in particular and Kashmir issue in general.
People in Jammu have been struggling for over 2 months now on this but they are neither heard nor been given any importance. On the other hand people in Kashmir get coverage in national media even when they burn tricolor and say that they are Pakistanis. If you merely look at the pictures appearing in the daily excelsior, and not even read text, you will get an idea what all Jammu people have been through. But thats it.. It stops there.. Nobody gets to know outside J&K what the reality is. This has always been happening and happened at the time of the forced migration of Kashmiri Pandits also.

The recent Gujrat elections have witnessed unaccountable money paid to media persons of both, print and electronic by Saudi Arabia to discredit Modi and the Hindutva forces, which the media did very faithfully without success. There are several major publishing groups in India, the most prominent among them being the Times of India Group, the Indian ExpressGroup, the Hindustan Times Group, the Hindu group, the Anandabazar Patrika Group, the Eenadu Group, the Malayalam Manorama Group, the Mathrubhumi group, the Sahara group, the Bhaskar group, and the Dainik Jagran group. Let us see the ownership of different media agencies.

NDTV: A very popular TV news media is funded by Gospels of Charity in Spain Supports Communism. Recently it has developed a soft corner towards Pakistan because the Pakistan President has allowed only this channel to be aired in Pakistan . Indian CEO Prannoy Roy is brother of Prakash Karat, General Secretary of the Communist party of India. His wife and Brinda Karat are sisters. Gujrat riots which took place in 2002 where Hindus were burnt alive, Rajdeep Sardesai and Bharkha Dutt working for NDTV at that time got around 5 Million Dollars from Saudi Arabia to cover only the Muslim victims which they did very faithfully. Not a single Hindu family was interviewed or shown on TV whose near and dear ones had been burnt alive, it is reported.
